Golden Globes 2024: A New Era of Red Carpet Fashion

The Golden Globes have always been a showcase of Hollywood glamour, but this year, fashion took an unexpected turn. While luxury houses like Balenciaga (worn by Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, and Ali Wong), Bottega Veneta (seen on Mikey Madison, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Yelena Yemchuk), and Louis Vuitton (chosen by Emma Stone, Zendaya, Cynthia Erivo, and Cate Blanchett) dominated the evening, the real story was the evolution of red carpet dressing.

For years, flowing gowns and traditional tuxedos have been the standard, but this year’s event signaled a departure from the expected. Ayo Edebiri stood out in a custom grey Loewe suit, an effortlessly cool alternative to eveningwear, while Kate Winslet opted for a cream-colored Erdem suit with delicate floral embroidery. Both looks highlighted a growing movement toward androgynous elegance, proving that power dressing is no longer just for the boardroom.

Another interesting shift came in the form of brand-new creative partnerships. Timothée Chalamet made headlines, not for his red carpet moment with Kylie Jenner (who wore a vintage Versace chainmail dress from spring 1999—famously worn in silver by Elizabeth Hurley in the ’90s), but for debuting the first Tom Ford design under the brand’s new creative director, Haider Ackermann. With Ackermann set to present his first full collection for Tom Ford at Paris Fashion Week in March, Chalamet’s look offered an early glimpse into the designer’s vision for the house.

Male actors in general seemed more willing to take fashion risks. Eddie Redmayne opted for a bold chequered Valentino suit, while Adrien Brody embraced the avant-garde in a three-piece Thom Browne ensemble featuring embroidery on the left shoulder. Colman Domingo, another standout in Valentino, incorporated bow details from his shirt to his shoes, adding a playful yet refined twist to menswear. Meanwhile, Jeremy Strong’s teal velvet Loro Piana suit and matching bucket hat ensured he was one of the night’s most talked-about attendees.

The Golden Globes have always reflected shifts in Hollywood’s cultural landscape, and this year’s fashion choices suggest that individuality and innovation are taking center stage. With the lines between traditional menswear and womenswear continuing to blur, the red carpet is becoming a space where self-expression thrives—setting the tone for what’s to come in 2024’s awards season.
